Christina Hi skilful readers, I try to spend a good corporeality of time reading to my five year son. He likes the magic tree house series, narnia, and my father'south dragon. I am looking for any recommendations on unproblematic chapter books that we can read together. Thanks,

C.L. Have yous thought about the Oz books past L. Frank Baum, the Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster or the Dr. Doolittle books past Hugh Lofting? They are full of adventure, fantasy and fun.

Susan Endeavor Nathaniel Fludd, Beastologist. They're written on about the third class level, rather brusque, only very entertaining. My quaternary graders ate them up and read the first ii individually afterwards I read them to the whole form. The writer is R. Fifty. Travers (I think); she's on GoodReads, herself.

The Phantom Tollbooth might exist one to go along for a later on age; my 4th graders are enjoying the story, merely they don't catch all the puns and references in it.

The Petty Prince would be good!

David One of my favorite "children'southward" books is Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie. I call it a "children's" because I didn't read information technology until sophomore English in high school, and, although it is a wonderfully fun and enchanting read, its deeper story reflects the circuitous conflicts of the author himself. Let's just say, I highly recommend this novel whether you want to read it with your son or simply on your own. (Likewise, to enhance your own agreement and appreciation of the book, inquiry Salman Rushdie.)

Christina Thanks for all the neat ides. Nosotros will have a lot to cover over the summer.

Becca brown Hey, i recently read a book called "The Princess and the goblin" past George MacDonald...i read it in less than day, just i think a five year erstwhile would actually like it. Super simple but sweet. perfect for piddling kids. make sure you endeavour this one.

Book Elf How-do-you-do, endeavour The Mysterious Benedict Society..it's very entertaining.

The Mysterious Benedict Society (Mysterious Benedict Society, #1) by Trenton Lee Stewart

The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey (Mysterious Benedict Society, #2) by Trenton Lee Stewart

The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma (Audio CD) by Trenton Lee Stewart

Kristen My nephew likes the Boxcar Children serial. And I know there's oodles of those :)

Robin The Misty of Chincoteague books are good, I don't know that he would similar the stories, merely it is family friendly. I read these books to my daughter when she was possibly a little older. Marguerite Henry is the author, I think.

Kyle My wife'south a kindergarten teacher. She says books by Mo Willems. Her students love them and think they're hilarious.

Robin Never heard of Mo Willems, good to know.

Scott Hayden Be enlightened that child's listening ability far exceeds reading ability. Then a book that is several grades higher up your child'due south reading level, may be fine as a read aloud.

Don't forget poetry. My wife reads the aforementioned short verse form to my children before each afternoon'southward read aloud. Inside a couple weeks, they've memorized information technology nearly effortlessly. Then she picks a new verse form. Even poems with difficult "erstwhile" English language sink in and go comprehensible with the repetitions.

yep, practiced point, scott, poesy is really good

Robin Dr. Seuss books are good for tongue twisters. similar Play a trick on in Socks. Kids at this historic period are all the same fascinated with words, I hope this works. Read Aloud past all means, or even aid the child to sound out words.

Elme Deyzel All the Walt Disney books! I loved information technology when my mom read them to me. Maybe Peter Pan besides..? It's a very cute children's volume!!!
You can too Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke, The Dragon Whisperer by Lucinda Hare (haven't read it merely my aunt said it'due south beautiful)

Robin Winnie the Pooh and the blustery day, The Decorated World of Richard Scarry. That is a fun book for kids to look at. It is most like a Where is Waldo for kids.

Abigail I'm not sure I'd read Peter Pan to a five-twelvemonth-old. It is a somewhat night and trigger-happy volume and may exist a little scary. Also, the themes of love and loss and growing old are beyond a kid that age and might pb to a fearfulness of being kidnapped or lost. I'd get out that one for when he'due south onetime plenty to read it for himself.

I'd leave the Phantom Tollbooth for a subsequently time considering it is full of puns and plays on words that will brand much more than sense to him when he has more feel with the written English language. Now it will just be confusing.

I wish I could assistance more with should-reads. At that place is a very good short chapter book chosen "Harry Cat'due south Pet Puppy" by George Selden, I believe. Information technology is nearly an alley cat who takes in a lost puppy, but realizes when the puppy grows into a big domestic dog that the puppy needs a permanent dwelling house. He needs to find one before the puppy becomes a permanent member of a pack of homeless dogs who roam the alleys and steal food.

When I was a 5 year old my mother read charlottes web and the little house on the praire books to me, merely sense i was so little i can barely recall any of them or what thier about, i think you should wait a year earlier you read charlottes web to him(if you practise.

The roald dahl books were the only ones i really liked-when i was five.

Yuliya Robert Munsch perfect for kids of age 5. We loved and read all his books with my daughter when she was in kindergarden- one grade

Milhouse My big sis read The Hobbit to me when I was 5 or six and I loved it.

Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little were besides not bad. I also retrieve some older books that might be hard to detect now days. One was phone call "Mrs. Coverlette'south Magicians" and "My Begetter's Dragon" was some other.

Rachel As a teacher I have to say, if information technology was a book yous enjoyed as a child past all ways read information technology. The fun part nigh reading to kids is y'all tin can read to them what they can't read themselves. Don't worry about them not understanding, they will ask what they want to know and the rest they can figure out when they are old enough to read information technology themselves. If you take a sports fan. Matthew Christopher has some wonderful books. Judy Blume is another good author. My son is a quaternary grader and reading the Humphry the hamster series (sorry I don't know the author). Promise this helps.

Beth I remember really liking Edward Eager books: Half Magic, The Fourth dimension Garden.
I 2d the Oz books- they are total of adventure, and at that place is nearly xviii of them, so plenty of choices.
More circuitous books tin can actually exist actually slap-up if you lot are there to read them. I remember listening to the Hobbit, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Air current in the Willows, The Odessey, stuff by Jules Verne, etc etc and really enjoying them. Plus, I recollect it kept my parents from wanting to gag when they read to me.

Michaela Have y'all heard of Usborne books? They publish the about intruiging childrens books. They are non commercial, so no Spongebob or Pokemon stuff. The books are designed to help kids learn to dear to read. My kids dearest the ones I read to them. Here is their website: https://s3986.myubam.com.

Kristina Seleshanko Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (very different from the moving picture, Charlotte's Web, Charlie and the Chocolate Manufacturing plant, James and the Giant Peach, The Hugger-mugger Garden, Stuart Little, Infant, Sorcerer of Oz, Socks...

Anne The Borrowers is a very good series! I beloved these books, and they are like shooting fish in a barrel to understand. I remember that there is 5 books in the series. As well when he gets a picayune scrap older K.A.Henty are EXCELLENT books that my brothers loved when they were younger through their teenage years. Based on historical facts.

He might be a little immature yet, but the hobbit is actually a kids book (where as LOTR is an adults volume) and so you could try that sometime :).

Mary Becca wrote: "Hey, i recently read a book called "The Princess and the goblin" by George MacDonald...i read it in less than day, but i remember a 5 year old would really similar information technology. Super simple but sweet. perfect fo..."

I loved this volume as well. I want to read the residuum of the series

Mary I remember that Charlottes Spider web and The picayune house books are perfect. read them to him while he is little and he volition want to read them when he is older. I loved listening to those books when I was piffling and he probably will too.
The Hobbit is way hard to read and then I wouldn't suggest that. It is to slow and boring and I don't think he would savor it.
